NEBDN LEVEL 4 CERTIFICATE IN FLUORIDE VARNISH APPLICATION
The NEBDN Certificate in Fluoride Varnish Application provides dental nurses with an educational experience that develops their knowledge, critical understanding, intellectual skills, practical skills and professional attitude.
The qualification supports dental nurses in developing the knowledge and competence required to contribute to fluoride varnish application within a community-based programme, on prescription from a dentist, or as part of a structured dental health programme, in accordance with the requirements of their role and applicable professional guidance.
If you are a qualified, GDC-registered dental nurse who is currently working in a dental setting, this qualification can help you develop your skills in preventive dentistry and contribute to improving patients’ oral health.
NEBDN FLUORIDE VARNISH APPLICATION COURSE AT A GLANCE:
Qualification: Level 4 Equivalent NEBDN Certificate in Fluoride Varnish Application.
Course provider: Dental Tutors.
Course start date: Enrol at any time and start studying the same day. There are no fixed start dates or waiting lists.
Who’s it for: This course is intended for qualified dental nurses who are currently employed as dental nurses in a dental setting and are registered with the General Dental Council (GDC).
Applicants must provide their GDC registration number so that their registration status can be verified. They must also have access to the required patient groups through their workplace.

Record of Competence: Learners are required to complete a work-based Record of Competence (RoC) to demonstrate that they have met the required learning outcomes.
The RoC consists of two sections:
- 15 Practical Competence Assessment Sheets (PCAS).
- 11 Supplementary Outcomes (SOs).
Learners must complete and satisfy the applicable RoC requirements to achieve the qualification.
Course Duration: 6-12 months, with a maximum completion period of 12 months.
Study Method: Online Zoom/Remote sessions, with learning materials available on our Online Students Hub.
Lessons: Zoom lessons on Sundays, 2 hours each.
Awarding Body: National Exam Board for Dental Nurses (NEBDN).

Course Fee: £900
Examination: There is no written examination for this qualification. The qualification is achieved by successfully completing the required Record of Competence.
Award of qualification: In order to be awarded this qualification, you must complete and satisfy the requirements of the RoC and pass the examination.
Finance: You can choose to pay monthly.
Workplace Experience and Patient Groups: Learners must have access to suitable patients through their workplace to complete the required work-based evidence.
The qualification requires learners to gain experience across at least five specified patient groups, in accordance with the applicable NEBDN requirements:
- Adolescents aged 12–15.
- Adult patients aged 16–24.
- Older patients aged 65 and above.
- Pregnant or breastfeeding mothers.
- Parents of preschool children aged 4 and under.
- Parents of primary-school children aged 5–11.
- Patients with special needs or medical conditions that may affect their oral healthcare.
Learners and their employers should be aware of the patient-group requirements before enrolment to ensure that appropriate workplace opportunities are available.
Can This Qualification Be Studied Alongside Oral Health Education?
The NEBDN Certificate in Fluoride Varnish Application can be undertaken as a standalone qualification or alongside the NEBDN Certificate in Oral Health Education.

The following syllabus is designed to provide Dental Nurses with the educational experience, including the knowledge, critical understanding, intellectual skills, practical skills and personal attitude to enable them to provide effective Fluoride varnish application within a community-based programme and / or on the prescription of a dentist.
On successful completion of the programme, dental nurses should be able to:
Knowledge and critical understanding:
- Understand the fundamentals of oral health promotion.
- Understand the role and limitations of dental fluoride varnish application.
- Understand the importance of ensuring appropriate patient safeguards are in place including how the training of personnel is assured, the need for appropriate referrals, the completion of consent forms and medical history forms, the arrangements for post application information and when there is a requirement for a Patient Group Directive.
Intellectual skills:
- Support their own learning and that of others.
- To make specific clinical judgements prior to applying Fluoride varnish.
Practical skills:
- Safely and effectively apply fluoride varnish to a range of patients within the current legal and ethical framework.
- Communicate effective advice on diet, plaque control and Fluoride use to a range of patients.
