Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS)

There are 4 levels of check: Basic, Standard, Enhanced, and Enhanced with barred list(s).

Ask the employer which level of DBS check is required for the job role? Neither you nor the DBS make that determination on their behalf.

BASIC CHECKS

This is the lowest level of DBS check and may only be done online. You can do this on your own behalf but I must again stress that you determine exactly what the employer needs to avoid unnecessary cost on your behalf.

STANDARD AND ENHANCED CHECKS

It is the employer/voluntary organisation’s responsibility to determine if a DBS check is needed, what level of check is required and how often checks must be updated on their employees.

The employer/voluntary organisation specifies which Registered Body you must contact.

The organisation that requires the check to be made, or has advised you that they require a check, usually provides you with the means or information required to make the application. There are two ways of applying for a Standard or Enhanced DBS check. You will either be asked to:

  • Telephone the DBS application line on 03000 200 190, in which case you will need to provide the Registered Body name and number (the employer should provide this to you)
  • Complete the paper application form handed to you by the person who asked you to apply.

WHAT IS THE COST OF STANDARD AND ENHANCED DBS CHECKS?

Effective from 1 October 2019, the fees payable to the DBS are £23.00 for a Standard Check and £40.00 for an Enhanced Check. The actual price you pay may be higher because the DBS do not control the administration and handling costs of the Registered Bodies who provide access to the checking service. The employer determines which type of check you need.

The DBS do not determine who pays for the check. This is agreed between the employer and the employee.
