NEBDN Certificate in Fluoride Varnish Application

NEBDN’s new qualification in Fluoride Varnish Application provides dental nurses with an educational experience in knowledge, critical understanding, intellectual skills, practical skills and personal attitude. This will enable them to provide effective fluoride varnish application within a community-based programme and/or on prescription from a dentist or as part of a structured dental health programme.

NEBDN’s Certificate in Fluoride Varnish Application is a versatile qualification that can be undertaken either in conjunction with the NEBDN Certificate in Oral Health Education, or, as a standalone qualification. Should a registered dental nurse wish to combine the two, please also refer to the NEBDN Certificate in Oral Health Education.

Who’s it for: This qualification is suitable for GDC registered dental nurses assisting their dentist in fluoride application. The qualification supports dental nurse development both professionally and on a personal level; developing self-confidence and self-belief. Through enhancing your skills, you will gain further respect from dentists and hygienists with whom you work as part of a team educating and improving the oral health of patients.

Record of Competence: To achieve a certificate in Fluoride Varnish Application you are required to complete a work-based Record of Competence (RoC). There are two sections to the RoC.

Course Duration: 6 Months.

Study Method:
Online/remote via Zoom, WhatsApp and our Online Students Hub.

Lessons:
One lesson per month (3 hours). One-to-one classes are also available on demand.

Awarding Body: National Exam Board for Dental Nurses (NEBDN).

Course Fee:
£800.

Exam Fee: There is no examination required for this qualification, however a fee of £95 is required to get the Certificate.

Exam dates: March or September.

Finance: You can choose to pay monthly.

Requirements:

  • Already GDC registered
  • Have the support of a GDC registered dentist
  • Have access to radiographic equipment necessary to complete the Portfolio.

Training in Dental Fluoride Varnish Application: Intended Learning Outcomes

The following syllabus is designed to provide Dental Nurses with the educational experience, including the knowledge, critical understanding, intellectual skills, practical skills and personal attitude to enable them to provide effective Fluoride varnish application within a community-based programme and / or on the prescription of a dentist.

On successful completion of the programme, dental nurses should be able to:

Knowledge and critical understanding:

  • Understand the fundamentals of oral health promotion.
  • Understand the role and limitations of dental fluoride varnish application.
  • Understand the importance of ensuring appropriate patient safeguards are in place including how the training of personnel is assured, the need for appropriate referrals ,the completion of consent forms and medical history forms, the arrangements for post application information and when there is a requirement for a Patient Group Directive.

Intellectual skills:

  • Support their own learning and that of others.
  • To make specific clinical judgements prior to applying Fluoride varnish.

Practical skills:

  • Safely and effectively apply fluoride varnish to a range of patients within the current legal and ethical framework.
  • Communicate effective advice on diet, plaque control and Fluoride use to a range of patients.

Personal attitude:

  • Empathise with patients, parents, carers and colleagues with different social and cultural backgrounds and with different care needs.
